??

Library World Records is a fascinating reference book first published in 2004 after intensive research work began on the book back in 2002. The book was further extensively updated in a second edition in December 2009. Library World Records provides hundreds of intriguing and comprehensive facts about ancient and modern books, manuscripts and libraries around the world.

15 years has passed since I first began research work on the reference book, and I am pleased to say that a much bigger brand new 3rd edition of Library World Records is now available. The new edition was published on the 30th of September 2017.

It soon becomes obvious from the theme of this book, Library World Records has been indeed called the Guinness Book of World Records specifically on books, manuscripts, librarians and libraries worldwide.

Although I began the writing the first edition in 2002, Library World Records first existed as a website between 1996 and 2001. At that time I never imagined my curiosity about library and book superlatives around the world would morph into a real reference book version. 20 years ago, back in summer 1997, Moira Duncan, a senior editor of the famous British library journal Managing Information did a review of Library World Records when it existed only as a website. You can find the review in the July/August 1997 issue, Vol 4 Number 6 issue. But the link below shows a duplicate of the review taken from the Way-Back-Machine database search for the 1997 issue of Managing Information, which back then was available in print and online.
1997 Review of Library World Records.

With more than 410 photographs from around the world showcasing ancient and modern libraries, papyrus, parchment and velum manuscripts, clay and stone inscriptions, incunabula, library buildings and famous librarians etc, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions of Library World Records offers readers amazing facts and figures about libraries around the world, and the three important things we normally find in them: books, periodicals and databases. The new book deals with superlatives and comparative information such as the first, the largest, the oldest, the smallest, most expensive, and other miscellanea in several categories covering a period of more than 5000 years.

The listed hundreds of facts above also vividly illustrate the wonder and rich evolution of books and libraries from crude and simple to sophisticated, complex and efficient.

In the above photograph, the author is seen promoting Library World Records 1st edition at the famous Vatican Library in Rome, back in summer 2004. Staff at the library in return gave me several fantastic photograhs of the Vatican Library interior, which I then used for the 2nd edition of the book, (I was not allowed to use my camera inside the library).

Since its publication in 2004, Library World Records has established itself as an international indispensable reference work on multi-disciplinary superlatives on libraries and books around the world, not just for librarians, researchers and students, but practically anyone who loves reading books or visiting libraries. The 2017 3rd edition of Library World Records builds on what the 2009 2nd edition offered. Updated data plus much more facts, figures and chapters resulting in over 170 extra pages together with brand new photographs from around the world, and a comprehensive and detailed index (over 45 pages) and above all an expanded and updated edition. Although the book is aimed at librarians and the general public, the 3rd edition will now include extensive lists of sources and further reading, making the 3rd edition invaluable to researchers, students and academics doing projects and dissertations.

There will also be an eBook version of the 3rd edition available from major eBook vendors such as Ebscohost (formerly NetLibrary), Amazon Kindle, Google Play Books, Barnes & Noble Nook, OverDrive Media, Apple iBooks, Kobo Books etc.

15 Years of Library World Records
As noted earlier on, in 2017, it will be 15 years since I began writing the very first words for the MS Word manuscript that would later become Library World Records, 1st edition, on a warm May morning back in 2002. The older parts of lwrw.org such as the link above called Godfrey's 2010 Librarian's Directory with Search Engine dates back to 1995, when I first set up the website, while doing my MSc course at City University. The parts of the website devoted to Library World Records date back to 2002. I want to thank all the librarians around the world who over the years have made helped me in many ways in maintaining this website.

I have intenionally made the homepage of my website to look very difficult on devices with small screens (i.e. mobile phones and tablets). Thus if you view my homepage on a device whose screen size is less than 10 inches, it will not look nice. I encourage visitors landing on www.lwrw.org to view it on PCs, Macs and laptops.
